May 15th, Aoi Festival

We rented bikes on a Sunday to get around the festival. The procession was held at the Kamigamo and Shimogomo Shrine. We were told that this tradition has continued unbroken from 1400 years ago. It was to celebrate a curse that was broken casted by a Kamo god on grain that was not ripening. The aoi (geranium leaves) were offerred to the gods and were also used to decorate the temples, carriages and attendees.
