There is definitely a class distinction in japanese society. The schoolchildren are a perfect example. All schools have different uniforms, the "salarymen" are in standard dark suits with ties, the "salarywomen" are also in suits, skirt and high-heel shoes. The train operators are in full uniform including white gloves and those hard top hats. The folks that clean the trains after the last stop have a light blue button down shirt with a yellow stripe across their back.

It seems that everyone is categorized to their line of work.
