Kota Bharu, Malaysia
While in Malaysia, we learned to modify our behavior to be respectful to the Muslim people and their culture.
We learned to:
- Cover up. Muslim women cover their head and neck with a shawl. This meant that I was unable to wear strapless, spagetti strap and halter tops, (no tank tops either) while out and about. Oh, and no shorts for me either, even if its 95 outside.

- Not to show signs of affection out in public.
- Not to point with your finger. Make a fist and point with your thumb.
It is weird at first, but ya get use to it.
- Not to eat with your left hand. Muslims (and many other cultures) use their left hand to clean themselves so their left hand does not touch food. While in Malaysia, we also learned to wash ourselves with our left hand ( no tp, just a spraywand) so we had to place our left hand behind our backs while eating so we dont have slip-ups in public.
There was one gesture common in asian countries that Nolen and I both loved and want to incorporate into habit; after meeting someone new and you just shook their hand, you touch your heart rightafter. It is the warmest gesture I've ever come across.
What always breaks barriers with the locals is if we break out in
hello's, good mornings, good evenings, and thank you's in their native language. We have picked up some good Malay and will continue to use it in Indonesia. « hide more
