Weka

When we stopped over at Buller Gorge swingbridge, we ran into the strangest lookin' bird at the carpark. From a distant it looked very much like a duck, the kind you'd see at Golden Gate park. When we looked closer, its head looked like a chicken so at that point we guessed it must be one of New Zealand's showcase quacks.

A couple of tourists said it was a swamp goose then I looked at them funny.

In the giftshop, I cruised the postcards and found a photo of it. Its a weka, one of New Zealand's flightless birds!
