Cockles for din-din, Our Last Caravan Meal
We were driving from a little town of Russell from the Bay of Islands and passed harbour at low tide. I believe it was called Whangatoroa
harbour. It was a zigzag road so we were driving slow and after a sharp turn we spotted an area where there was walk-in access to a harbour and saw a guy picking up clams and a bucket in the other hand.
I begged Nolen to stop but he was driving a little too fast so we missed the pullover. Its ok, we did a U-ey and soon we were tip-toeing our way into low tide digging for clams. I can tell the eats were good because I saw those pretty NZ birds called Oystercatchers

having their go at the harbour full of cockles. Most of the cockles I picked up on the surface were already emptied by the Oystercatcher. I walked further out and dug just an inch from the surface and found live ones! and there were LOTS and LOTS of them.
I could have dug for just a half hour and had enough cockles to serve dinner to 10 people there were so many.
We just picked up enough for dinner that night and sauteed them in olive oil, garlic and good wine wine. It was fantastic! Once we got a taste of them we knew we should have pick more but we would have overdosed in clams. « hide more
