Murawai Beach - Gannet Colony - Nesting Season
This Gannet colony is the only land based colony in the Southern Hemisphere, since they usually nest on islands. The Gannets with large wing spans have to judge the distance and speed of their prey before they dive into the water because for a short time they are blind catching it in their mouths.

Ultimately many die due to starvation as the constant diving makes them blind. After learning to fly, they travel to the East coast of Australia not learning the directions to not knowing how to catch their prey, its all instict. After a couple of years the Gannets fly back to the same nest on Murawai Beach in New Zealand to look for life long mates. Young bachelors have courting rituals that involve moving their heads from side to side and touching their necks together, very romantic to watch. They don't make the same trip twice. The more dominant older Gannets are in the middle nests as the more younger ones are on the outsides. It was funny to see and lots of work, Gannets building their nests with seaweed and grasses. The wind is very sharp here since it is very easy for take off and landing. Sometimes the wind carried the nesting material right over the edge or a fight of loud quacks might break out over the ownership of seaweed or grass. One time there was a bird fighting over grass as another bird behind snatched some for themselves right under her. Very beautiful indeed. « hide more
