The morning after our night in the jungle . . .
. . . and after our delicious breakfast, we all hoped that the elephants had not wandered far because we couldn't go back to the sanctuary without them. Each of us followed a mahout (elephant caretaker) and headed different directions throughout the jungle. Luckily, 30 minutes further uphill, we found one just hiding behind tall blades of grass eating away.
Once we found an elephant we headed back to the hut and waited for the others to come back.

This is BK, short for a long thai name. He only has one tusk. Previous owners underdosed him with anesthetic and chainsawed his right tusk as far up his tusk cavity. They got the tusk but cracked the remaining tusk which led to an infection that has not healed. It has been 2 years since it happened.
We were told that when he first arrived at the sanctuary, he would not let anyone get close to him. It was a big challenge for BK to trust humans again. The biggest lesson we can learn from this is being able to forgive. If elephants can do it, we can too. « hide more
