Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi Vietnam
We arrived in Hanoi amidst foggy and chilly weather, a bit like San Francisco weather. We put on 3 layers and went out for a walk around Old Quarter town and around the lake. It was a bustling little town buzzing with motorbikes which made for an adventure just crossing the street! The lonely planet book suggested "walking" and NEVER running to try to avoid getting run over! We just ignored our instinct to run and kept an eye out at the motorbikes.

While walking around the lake, we were approached by a young man practically begging us to practice his english with him. He was an engineer student looking to find work overseas but his poor english limited his opportunities so he's studying english on his own. We sat on a lakeside bench and practiced the "L" and "H" sounds. It was a lesson for all of us. He practiced his english and we had a chance to appreciate the value of knowing the english language. « hide more
